Project 6: Design/Build GIS (Week 3)
Analysis and Display

Objective:
analyze a newly created spatial dataset and visualize it through thematic mapping
utilizing the database created in project 4

Above is a screen shot of the percentage of total registered voters in each block group for the city of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.  The areas with the lowest percentage of registered voters are located in three blocks shown in dark green on the western and eastern sides of the city.  The raw numbers of registered voters in each of the three blocks is 567, 694, and 807, respectively from west to east.

The above screen shot shows pie charts of party affiliations for each of the block groups overlaid on the Hispanic voter registration percentage.  From a brief glance one can tell that the Mugwump and Whig parties dominate the distinct block groups.

Above is a screen shot showing in black those block groups with a higher number of Whig votes versus Mugwump votes.  This shows the variation in party support within the city.  The Mugwump party dominates all the other block groups.  This selection is overlaid on the registered Hispanic votes.

Above is a screen shot of the raw count of Hispanic voters in each block group.  The areas with the highest percentage of registered Hispanic voters are shown in dark blue.  The numbers correspond to the raw numbers of Hispanic voters in each block group.

Above is a screen shot shows crosshatched areas demonstrating a higher proportion of Whig votes to Mugwump votes overlaid on the raw numbers of Hispanic voters in each block.  Generally, the high raw numbers are located in areas with crosshatching.  A few block groups, particularly one orange block group with the number 137 and two lighter blue areas with the numbers 72 and 92, are areas of high raw numbers of Hispanic votes and the Whigs would do well to distribute flyers in these light blue eastern blocks as well as in the orange block in the west.

Also, using the table below which shows the percentage of all ethnicities that are registered to vote in the column labeled Pct_Alleth, equaling 54.8%.  The percentage of all Hispanics registered to vote is located in the column labeled Pct_Hisp and is equal to 23.7%.  This proves that the Hispanic population makes up almost half of the current voting population and is and will continue to be an important source of votes for the distinct parties.
